OUTREACH

Primary Components of FAITH

An awareness of the key components of FAITH provides some important background and context.

The Sunday School class.
FAITH focuses on the work assigned to the class of each age division. As a result, three-person FAITH Teams are enlisted from a Sunday School class or department. The teams are assigned visits to prospects and members of their class or department. FAITH Team members should serve as outreach-evangelism leaders in their classes.

Some visits may be to members who need caring or maintenance; many members have short- or long-term crises or concerns, while others may have dropped out of ongoing participation or involvement in Sunday School.

Other visits may be to persons targeted for the class. These persons do not know the Lord or may not be participating in any ongoing Bible study. Who better to try to reach them than persons of similar age, needs, and life situations?

Sunday School leadership meetings.
Sunday School leadership meets regularly to deal with people issues as they are impacted by God's Word and the ministry of caring believers. As prospects are discovered and people are visited, follow-up actions are planned and implemented. These actions affect both members and prospects. This ongoing meeting focuses on a class accomplishing all of its functions.

Coordination meetings. Those persons who relate to multiple FAITH Teams/Team Leaders are called FAITH Group Leaders. They should serve as department or division outreach-evangelism directors. They meet regularly to coordinate assignments and follow-up. The leaders build accountability and motivation into the FAITH ministry. They also are among FAITH's strongest and best promoters.

Evangelism training. Integral to FAITH is an intentional process and plan to train persons to share their faith using a simple visitation sequence and easy-to-remember gospel presentation. FAITH as an acronym is used in making the presentation. Training includes classwork, home study, and on-the-job training by persons who already have been trained and are mentoring others in the process.

Sixteen sessions of training, visitation, and home study provide enough information, practice, and modeling for learners to put into practice a recommended sequence for visits and to learn the specific FAITH gospel presentation. During this time of equipping, trainees experience firsthand opportunities to learn the gospel and share it personally as they visit Sunday School members and prospects.

Public profession of faith and assimilation into the church. There is a big difference between leading a person to make a personal commitment to Christ and that person making a public profession of faith. FAITH intentionally links persons through the nurturing ministry and ongoing fellowship of the Sunday School and helps them come to the point of making a public declaration of faith.

One reason many converts do not follow up on their profession of faith is because church leaders have not helped them relate to the church and other Christians. When we connect new converts to the Sunday School, we increase the possibility of their being baptized and discipled.

Discipleship of those being trained. One of the intentional distinctives of the training materials and process is to help participants in their personal journey of Christian faith. Learners and team leaders model the process that helps them see personally how God is at work in their lives and in the lives of those who are being discovered and visited.

Teams trained to equip other persons in ministry and to share their faith. Once a person is trained by a mentor in evangelism, he or she is prepared and energized to mentor a team of two other persons in the same process. Sustained evangelism training captures the best of what Christ has empowered His people to do: obey the Great Commission and teach others to do so.

How is our church involved in FAITH?

In August 2000, Pastor Kevin, Greg Fortson, and Todd Spain joined many other churches and spent one week at the First Baptist Church of Carrollton, Texas at a FAITH Clinic. The purpose of the clinic was to teach them the FAITH process. Upon their return they presented FAITH to the members of Trinity Baptist on a Sunday evening in October. About 60 of our church members responded to the challenge of becoming team members. These teams will go out into the community to make contacts, as they are learning FAITH and reaching Abilene for Christ.

How can I personally be involved in FAITH?

Commit now to learn the FAITH process. Plan now to be involved in the upcoming semesters which lasts sixteen weeks. You can also be a part of FAITH by being available to pray for participants on visitation night, watch the children of FAITH team members, or be on the kitchen staff to prepare meals for those coming straight from work to FAITH. For more information, please contact Jill Fortson, FAITH secretary
